200 hammocks, a siesta in the forest: A creative peaceful collective action

MATÉRIALS FOR THE ARTS MONTRÉAL – MATERIAL RESEARCH COLLABORATOR
MAM develops a programme allowing waste and surplus materials from industries, commerce and institutions (ICI), to be distributed to artists and art programs that need them. MAM supplies Entre 2 arbres with fabric waste from Montreal industries.

COMITÉ SOCIAL CENTRE SUD – COMMUNITY COLLABORATOR
CSCS is a popular education non profit organization. CSCS collaborated with Entre 2 Arbres in September 2009 during Les Journées de la culture. The 3 hammock making workshops greated 25 participants and gave form to 16 hammocks.

CITIZENS – PARTICIPANTS
Montrealers or visitors, they are engaged in the project’s stakes and choose to participate to the fabrication of hammocks or the Siesta Day.

Project description

Entre 2 arbres is an artistic environmental installation focusing on creative community engagement. Based on an relational artistic practice this projects brings together Land art, popular education and contemporary art.

Objectives

• Gather divers populations and organizations around one action: a siesta and an ecological concern: the forest
• Recreate the link between citizens and their urban forests
• Create a creative context for sharing and collaboration
• Initiate to sewing
• Promoting siesta

Population

Entre 2 arbres aims to gather people from divers background, generations, and horizons as well as social and environmental local organizations. It addresses:

• Montrealers in need for siestas
• Citizens caring for forest protection
• Community structures wanting to add hammock making workshops to their activities and to their members intention
• Environmental organizations engaged in forest protection campaign who want to add a creative and community element to their actions and events.

Deployment

Hammock making workshops

The making of the 200 hammocks will take place during sewing workshops supervised by the artist in collaboration with interested organizations:

• Popular education community centers
• Social insertion sewing workshops
• Senior centres

Participants will be making hammocks with sewing machines and industrial fabric wastes. These workshops will be an opportunity for initiation to machine sewing or improvement. We will be collectively conceiving and realizing solid, functional hammocks of diverse sizes and colors.

Taking the form of weekly workshops or a series of two three-hour-sessions they will host an average of ten people. These will lead to the achievement of one hammock per person or per team.
 

Hammock Library

This hammock “library” will allow anyone to borrow a hammock for free, to integrate it in one’s daily life for one week.
The hammock library also offers its collaborators to install a hammock in a common space of their office to improve their employees’ quality of life and welfare.

The siesta day

Entre 2 Arbres aims to establish a siesta day, on august 22nd, 2010. This day will gather the collective installation of the 200 hammocks. It will take place in Mont Royal forest and will welcome the public.

This event will gather all the project’s collaborators and workshops participants. It will be followed by a collective citizen action: a siesta in the forest. Members of the public will also be invited to join in the creation of this dream. The siesta will be photographed.

To create a mobilizing event around environmental protection, Entre 2 arbres seeks to develop partnerships with ecological organizations and structures involved in environmental consciousness raising.

Exibitions

The project’s four phases will give form to several exhibitions : large-scale photographs series, drawings, outdoors in situ installations, gallery installations, video-documentation and project’s artefacts.
