Humanitarian photo documentary
Ethiopia
Through this world but once
This body of works attempts to capture the essence of the November 2006 and February 2007 humanitarian missions of Rotaplast International in Ethiopia. It seeks to depict the human experience behind the humanitarian action. It combines three different faces: the Ethiopian people, true, humble and proud; the Rotaplast team in action; and the soul therapist, Dawish the Clown. These three portraits brought together open up a world of possibilities that initially seem to be out of our individual reach.

This photographic series reveals a journey filled with shared emotions and a constant struggle between joy and sorrow, suffering and healing, between laughter and tears. With this work, Wayne Schoenfeld immortalizes the second Therapeutic Clowns mission of Exeko conducted in 2008. Three clowns, a team of surgeons and a population of Nepal living a democratic turn, these are the elements that build the story of these moving pictures. Happy faces kept appearing above the fence after each successful operation, just as tortured bodies kept coming in, facing their doom and the absence of any other choice. These pictures touch by the messages they convey. It’s a common language through laughter and children’s eyes which do not lie. It’s a personal work around universal themes such as love, war, life, death and revival.
A documentary film about the powerful experiences in Nepal is currently in post production.
